Curry powder, toddy, palmyra trees are all things that are reminiscent of the northern district of Sri Lanka. Rich in its own heritage, Jaffna and its suburbs have their own unique offerings from food to drink to culture. Jaffna has become more accessible for over a decade now with the end of a 30-year old war which plagued the country, and has become a popular destination with many historical places to visit.
The Hill country is best known for its cold weather, beautiful mountain scapes and very rich cultural heritage as one of the longest reigning historical capitals of the country and its last kingdom. Remains of the Kandyan Kingdom are better preserved compared to its predecessors. Kandy is also home to the ‘Dalada Maligawa’, the famed Temple of the Tooth Relic and boasts the longest and grandest historical processions (“Perahera”) that is still held annually in the island. Devotees from around the island and overseas visit Kandy every year during the months of July and August to witness the grandeur of the Perahera.
Sri Lanka has recently become more and more of a popular quest for adrenaline junkies. If you are one, get your fix by learning the art of kitesurfing in Kalpitiya, taking a hot air balloon ride in Dambulla, zip line across Flying Ravana (Sri lanka's longest and fastest zip line) or trek the caves of ‘Nil Diya Pokuna’ in Ella. All this and many more including water sports like jet skis, surfing, and water skiing, just hours away from each other.
Nightlife in Sri Lanka is quite diverse with its unique charm. Although maybe not as colourful as Bangkok or Las Vegas, it does have its own charm. In the city you’d find several night clubs, pubs and karaoke bars scattered around that cater to a diverse audience from young adults to older youth with varying ranges of music genres. Outside the city night life is most prominent in the southern and south-western coasts although seasonal events may extend towards the other coastal areas as well.
While traditional authentic Sri Lankan Street food does exist, Sri Lanka has developed a new street food culture (especially within the city) of fusion food like buns, sandwiches and burgers with a Sri Lankan twist to it. Catch a few of these mouth-watering treats from food trucks along Marine Drive or Thalawathugoda or off a roadside hut in Hulftsdorp. But do be warned some of these treats can be quite spicy and aren’t for the faint hearted.
Sri Lanka is a country that is absolutely rich in its culture and heritage. A significant part of that heritage is owed to its historical kingdoms. Although sadly reduced to ruins, scattered throughout the island you can find some amazing marvels of historical architecture and engineering which you could visit and see for yourself. The Rock Fort of Sigiriya, the Minneriya Tank and the Embekka Temple are only a few of the many examples of the remains of these ancient kingdoms of our tiny island nation.
